Our History

Lighting the way in Oklahoma for over 90 years

Shawver & Son, Inc. is the successor to one of the oldest electrical contracting companies in Oklahoma City.  McEldowney & Son had been in business since 1919 when John W. Shawver left OG&E to become a part owner in 1947.  He acquired all of the McEldowney family interest in 1954, and in 1956, after the return of John W. Shawver II from military service in Korea, the name was changed to Shawver & Son, Inc.

Founder John W. Shawver, Sr. graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado in 1917.  John W. Shawver, Jr. graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado in 1953.  He acquired majority ownership from his father in 1970. Dan Cheatham was president from 1981 until his retirement in 1992, when John W. Shawver III became president.  John III graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma in 1986.  He has been owner and Chairman of the Board since 1997. Keith Shawver - the son of the son...of the son - recently graduated in 2014 with a BS in Electrical Engineering from OU and is currently employed as a project manager at Shawver (he's also the website developer).

Don Schluchter is the current CEO.  All of the Shawvers as well as Dan Cheatham and Chris Schoolcraft have served as President of the Western Oklahoma Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).  Chris served as District 5 Vice President of NECA national from 2005-2008.

For over ninety years Shawver & Son has provided the highest quality, industry standard service.  Every project contracted has been finished according to the customer specifications (including some projects started by other contractors which we completed for the client).  We strive to meet and exceed our customers' expectations.

Through both hard economic times and good times we have grown our company.  Shawver & Son, Inc. was a Metro50 company in 2010.  We are long-time members of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau.

We expanded into digital cabling systems in the nineties and adapted to provide Oklahoma and surrounding areas the best in data and communications services.  In 1993 we joined the TEGG network, using infrared and other testing technology to provide enhanced preventive maintenance and safety opportunities for our customers.

Technological advances continually provide new challenges and opportunities, so Shawver & Son, Inc. has always maintained a diverse staff ranging from electrical engineers to certified electricians to business professionals that ensure completion of every task.  A lot has changed in the electrical contracting world since John Shawver, Sr. founded the company, but his ideals remain the foundation for what the company stands for -  quality service, integrity, and a competitive spirit have energized Shawver & Son from one generation to the next.
